Whenever I went to a city that I'd never been to in Australia, I always visited the visitor information center first to ask for the information about the scenic spots and city map. Usually the landmarks or scenic spots will be marked on the map, with this information and my feet or public transportation system, I can stop by them one by one.

At this moment, I got some maps of the major cities in Australia, Darwin, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Alice Springs, Katherine, the whole map of Tasmania, Hobart, Brisbane, Cairns. Even though I had to drop some stuff for reducing the weight of my checked baggage and moving easily and quickly among the cities without heavy baggage in the later period of my trip in Australia, I still kept all the maps, because they are my remembrance of the days there.

It's reasonable that the tourist industry is well-developed in Australia because of their large land area, free transportation in cities, lots of festivals, weaker current compared to the countries in Europe and America, serious operation on the scenic spots, environment protection, international official language, full of tourist information centers near scenic spots and English education that attracts lots of students from all over the world.

Most of the staff in the tourist information centers are friendly and would answer no mater what questions you ask, transportation, accommodation, scenic spots, car rental. They also provide you lots of free maps and tour brochures. Some information centers even have webpage, you can find the info you need beforehand even though you aren't there.
